Barkev’s is a diamond and jewellery store. It advertises with the slogan “crafted to perfection”. This suggests that it holds high-quality jewellery pieces.
The big question in this Barkevs review is whether this is just an advert speak, or whether Barkev’s actually hold high-quality pieces that are crafted to perfection.
Also, does the company offer a wide range of products to satisfy your selection needs? What about their prices; are their jewellery competitively priced? If the company has the product quality and pricing, what about its service; does it offer top services that you’ll expect of an ideal jewellery store (such as easy ordering, fast delivery, easy returns, effective customer support services, good after-sales service, etc)?
In the first place, is Barkev’s legit, or is it just another scam front?

What is Barkev’s?
Barkev’s says that since 1981 it has been successful in the designing and manufacturing of fine jewellery. With the rise of the internet and e-commerce, Barkev’s had to join the train; and its website was started in 2004.
Barkev’s is an America company having its headquarters in Los Angeles. Unlike many jewellery stores that list jewellery from other sources; every piece that you buy in Barkev’s is made to order, and handcrafted by their artisans at their facility.
Is Barkev’s legit?
With fraudsters all over the internet and successfully ripping off unsuspecting persons on a regular basis, before making any online purchase, it’s wise to determine that the online store is legit. This is especially so where diamonds are involved because of the significant investment required. Thus, the big question is whether Barkev’s is legit. The short answer to that is YES.
Our first check of a legit online store is usually legality. This is because the stores that are 100% legal are less likely to be scams. Thankfully, Barkev’s ticks this box. The website is operated by a privately owned company, which is dully registered in the US. Suffice it to say that scam stores do not obtain company legal registration certificates.
Another check of a legit online store is visibility and industry-wide recognition. This is because the scam stores largely operate in the shadows. Thankfully, Barkev’s ticks this box. Thanks to its operating model of handcrafting every product in its base in Los Angeles, it has a robust physical existence.
Also, thanks to its “Try-on at home” program (more on this later), the popularity of Barkev’s is growing in the diamond retailing industry. Suffice it to say that the scam stores operate virtually, with no physical existence.
Another check of a legit online store is the test of time. This is because the scam stores are usually short-lived. As persons are scammed, the store is exposed; and with such exposure, they close up. Thankfully, Barkev’s passes this test of time.
It was started as far back as 1981 and joined the online bandwagon in 2004. Suffice it to say that no scam store can continue ripping off people using the same front for decades.
However, the ultimate check of a legit online store is fitness for purpose. In this regard, it means delivery real and functional pieces to customers when they place orders. There’s no doubt that Barkev’s ticks this box. Customers who place orders are sure to receive delivery of real products that are gorgeous.
That said, with Barkev’s being 100% legal, having industry-wide recognition, having operated for decades, and always fulfilling orders with real and functional products, there is no doubt that it is a legit online diamond and jewellery retailer.
Is Barkevs safe?
Barkev’s is safe. It’s also important that the legit online store be safe. Safety ensures that the sensitive information (such as personal information and credit card details) that you share with the store is adequately protected and not allowed to leak out to unauthorized third parties.
In this regards, Barkev’s says that it is committed to ensuring that your information is secure and that it has put in place suitable physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the users’ data.
Barkev’s does not give the details of these procedures, but there’s nothing to suggest that they are not sufficient in ensuring the safety of users’ data. For example, in one and a half-decade of online operation, there’s been no complaint of compromised data.
Products
Product Range
You’ll want the ideal store to offer a vast selection of items so that you can find what you need. Barkev’s ticks this box. The product category you’ll find in the Barkev’s menu is as follows:
Barkev’s Engagement Rings:
Engagement Rings – Like most diamond and jewellery companies, the engagement rings are some of the most popular products of Barkev’s. In the Engagement Rings category, the different sections you’ll find are: Diamond engagement Ring, Princess Cut Engagement Rings, Rose Gold Engagement Rings, Solitaire Engagement Rings, Halo Engagement Rings, Bridal Sets, Black Diamond Engagement Rings, Cushion Cut Engagement Rings, Sapphire Engagement Rings, Moissanite Engagement Rings, Moissanite Solitaire Engagement, and Rings.
Barkev’s Wedding Rings:
Barkevs women Wedding Rings:
Barkevs Men Wedding Rings:
Wedding Rings – Men’s wedding bands and women’s wedding band. You’ll find all of Rose Gold, Yellow Gold, White Gold, Diamond, Black Diamond, and more.
Barkev’s Fine Jewelry:
Fine Jewelry – Diamond Necklaces, Gemstone Necklaces, Diamond Earrings, Stud Earrings, Halo Stud Earrings, Gemstone Rings, and Diamond Bracelets
- Diamond Search – You can also buy loose diamonds in Barkev’s. You’ll find all popular diamond shapes – Round, Princess, Asscher, Pear, Cushion, Emerald, Radiant, Marquise, Oval, and Heart.
- Lab Grown diamonds – It’s not news that the process of mining diamonds can have devastating effects to the environment. Thus eco-friendly diamonds are becoming popular. They are not different from the natural diamonds; they even have the same chemical composition, such that even gemologist cannot tell them apart. The only difference is that they are grown in the labs. Barkev’s has a collection of these lab grown diamonds, in the 10 popular shapes plus Vintage Cushion, and Rectangular Vintage Cushion.
Inventory Size
The ideal diamond and jewellery store should not only have different products but should also have a large inventory in every product section. It’s a no-brainer that you are more likely to find something that you like if you have a large pool to choose from. In this regards, Barkev’s just about tick the box. It is definitely not the industry inventory leader, but it has modest numbers in each product section that’ll satisfy many a shopper.
For example, at the time of writing this review, Barkevs had 12,631 loose diamonds, while their lab grown diamonds numbered 2,221. This pales in comparison to industry inventory leaders (like James Allen and Blue Nile) who hold over 100,000 loose diamonds each. However, the about 12,600 diamonds consist of stones of: 0.18 – 26.20 carat, D – J Color, and SI2 – FL clarity; such that no matter your preference, you’ll find something that brightens your heart.
To put the relatively modest collection of Barkev’s in perspective. At the time of writing this review, we searched for 1.00-carat Round H VS2 diamonds and found only 7 diamonds. Using the same specs, James Allen gave 137 diamonds, while Blue Nile gave 84.
Product Quality
Apart from the kind of money that goes into diamonds and related jewellery, they are usually very symbolic. Thus, you’ll want nothing but very high-quality pieces. Thus, the ideal online diamond and jewellery store should not only hold a good range of prices and large inventory but should also feature very high quality. Thankfully, Barkev’s comes out well in this regards; and the following are pointers to that.
- In-House Manufacture
The company likes to say that “every Barkev’s piece is a handcrafted luxury from the City of Angels”. This is because from initial design to finished products, all products are manufactured in-house by Barkev’s artisans right in their headquarters in Los Angeles. By overseeing all aspects of production, the company is able to keep an eye on quality to ensure that their pieces uphold the highest standards of jewellery.
- Reputable Lab Gradings
When it comes to diamond, to be sure that you are buying a quality piece, only buy a lab graded diamond. There are certain characteristics that may not be obvious, but which are significant in terms of performance and value, and these factors will be revealed in the lab reports.
However, not just any lab reports will do. To be assured of a diamond’s quality, the diamond should hold certificates from reputable diamond grading labs. Some diamond stores use in-house lab reports; but we’ll advise against those because you could be getting stones with bumped upgrading (your diamond may be graded H VS2, while it’s actually I color and SI2 clarity).
The independent lab reports are definitely better, but even with those not all lab reports are equal. In fact, we’ll say that to be sure you have a quality piece that is what the Lab reports says it is, you should look for only diamonds from AGS (American Gem Society), GIA (Gemological Institute of USA), and EGL (European Gemological Laboratory).
Thankfully, Barkev’s diamonds are GIA and EGL graded (there are not too many AGS graded diamonds around).
- Customer Reviews
One of the best ways to determine the quality that a store offers is to look at what its customers have to say about it. Granted, quality is largely subjective, and what is high quality to someone may not be to another person. However, where there are many raving reviews, something right must be happening. For this we scoured the web (independent sources) for reviews of Barkev’s customers. We are happy to report that every single review we found had only positives to sing about, which in most cases included the quality of products.
For example: in Google Reviews, Barkev’s had a perfect 5/ 5 rating. Specific reviews included the following:
- Vahag Taymizyan – I wanted the best ring for my fiancé and came to the right place! Everyone was extremely helpful and [the] service was great. They created the most beautiful and perfect engagement ring that my fiancé and I fell in love with…
- Edward Sanchez – I was introduced to Barkev’s through a friend. [Its] impeccable service and pieces speak for itself. I was satisfied with the wedding bands I purchased for myself and wife. It was exactly what we were looking for. The detail is perfect. I only have great things to say about this business…
- Logan T – I shopped Barkev’s online and found the perfect unique engagement ring. The quality, craftsmanship and service did not disappoint… and I have a VERY happy fiancé…
- Yasmine Rafidi – Got the most beautiful custom emeralds studs from there! The emerald quality was the best I’ve seen sitting in a beautiful gold setting. To top it off, I got a sonic jewellery cleaner as a gift…
Other Features
Advanced Search
With the numbers you’ll find in the diamond inventory of jewellery stores, finding your choice stone can seem overwhelming. The diamond stores usually allow customers to search using shape, carat, colour, clarity, and some time price. However, diamond enthusiasts know that there is more to diamonds than the 4Cs.
Barkev’s also knows this and provides an advanced search tool that allows you to search for your choice diamonds using advanced filters. The search filters include Cut, L:W ratio, Fluorescence, Polish, Symmetry, and Lab Report. With the Advanced Search, searching for your perfect diamond is made easier.
Try It At Home Program
As popular as online shopping is, when it comes to expensive jewellery, many shoppers still prefer the brick and mortar stores because of being able to try on the jewellery. However, there’s no doubt that a physical store cannot hold the numbers (of items) that an online store will have. Thus, you’ll be limited in terms of the designs that you’ll find in any physical store.
Should you give up finding a vast selection to choose from o that you’ll be able to physically assess the item and try it on; or should you go for finding a vast selection and give off being able to try on the item? This is a classic case of “you can eat your cake and have it”. However, with Barkev’s you can eat your cake and have it via its “Try It At Home” program.
The program allows you to try out ring samples for up to 5 days. The ring samples are made from CZ in silver and are crafted to perfection, just like the engagement ring you’ll be interested in (CZ is Cubic Zirconia, and is a crystalline material that looks so much like a diamond in its brilliance and clarity).
If you opt for the Home Try-On program, Barkev’s will send you the ring sample along with a pre-paid shipping label. When your 5 glorious days of flexing the ring sample are up; you’ll have to put the sample in its original packaging, attach the shipping label to the box, and drop it off at your local UPS location.
Know that; a $200 deposit is required to participate in the program for each ring sample. However, you’ll not be out of pocket. If you decide to purchase a ring, the deposit will be applied to the new order; but if you decide not to go with the purchase, your $200 deposit will be refunded in full.
Diamond Upgrade Program
Growth is what we want for ourselves. Thus, if you purchase a diamond from Barkev’s, it’ll be nice to be able to go back for a bigger diamond. However, bigger stones will command bigger prices. So that a bigger stone won’t cost you an arm, Barkev’s (like many other diamond retailers) has a diamond upgrade program.
How the program works is very simple. You return a former diamond to Barkev’s and you’ll receive credits equals to 100% of the original price towards getting the new diamond. However, the upgrade applies to only GIA and AGSL graded diamonds purchased directly from Barkev’s. Also, the price of the new diamond must be at least 50% more than the price of the original diamond.
While diamond upgrades are generally good; the program as run by Barkev’s is somewhat limited. First, it applies to only GIA and AGS graded diamonds. This means that customers who buy from the range of EGL graded diamonds in Barkev’s cannot take advantage of the upgrade program.
Also, the program applies to only stones purchased directly from Barkev’s. This rules out even stones purchased from their dealers. However, there are many diamond stores whose upgrade program applies to even diamonds bought from other stores.
Inspection and Cleaning
It is well known that having jewellery inspected and cleaned can help extend the life of the jewelry or prevent the loss of a stone. Thus, when buying diamonds, customers also lookout for the “inspection and cleaning” service of the retailer.
Barkev’s ticks this box. It even encourages its customers to send in their rings for inspection and cleaning every 6 months or anytime the ring undergoes trauma. Interestingly, inspection and cleaning service is free of charge. More so, you will only pay to ship the ring to Barkev’s, while the company will cover the cost of shipping the ring (after cleaning) back to you.
Warranty
If you spend considerably on an item, you’ll want some warranties. Well, Barkev’s stands behind the quality and craftsmanship of its jewelry, and warrant that all its items will be free from manufacturing defects for the life of the products.
If you believe that your ring has a manufacturing defect, reach out to Barkev’s and obtain a Warranty Authorization Number (WAN). The company will arrange for you to send the ring to them for inspection; and if the defect is covered by the warranty, it will be repaired at no cost to you.
However, a $50 deposit will be required, before shipping the ring to Barkev’s. If the defect is warrantied (covered by the warranty), you’ll get a full refund. However, if the defect is not warrantied, you’ll receive a repair quote. If you approve of the repair work, the $50 deposit will be applied to the repair; but if you do not approve of the repair, the ring will be shipped back to you, and the $50 will be applied to cover the shipping charges.
It should be noted that the warranty covers only manufacturing defect; damage due to normal wear and tear, loss of gemstones, product loss, theft or mysterious disappearance. Coverage also excludes damage caused by failure to obtain the repairs required to preserve the integrity of the jewelry.
Thus, if you do not send in your ring for inspection and cleaning at least every 6 months, the warranty is voided. Also, if you any kind of work (repair, resizing, etc) is performed on the ring by a jeweler other than Barkev’s, the warranty is voided.
Pricing and Related Policies
Pricing
Even with high-end products like diamonds and related jewellery, no one will want to pay what is perceived as unreasonable. Thus, the ideal online store will feature prices that are perceived as reasonable. Barkev’s does relatively well in this regards as its prices are competitive.
Checking the prices of items in Barkev’s against the prices of similar items in other jewelry stores will quickly reveal this. For example, at the time of writing this review, Barkev’s listed 1.00-carat Round H VS2 diamonds for $4,195 – $6,840.
This was only slightly different from what these diamonds were going for in competing stores. For example, James Allen had diamonds of equal spec going for $4,730 – $6,560; while Blue Nile had them going for $4,247 – $7,165. That said; Barkev’s is competitively priced.
Promotions
Almost everyone like promotions, as the promos help customers save by getting products for less than the products’ going price. With people always looking out for promotions, the ideal online store should run regular promotions.
In this regard, Barkev’s didn’t even bother to step out. The landing page of the website was devoid of price slashing promos. True, the online diamond and jewellery retailers are not as generous with promotions as other retailers of fashion accessories.
However, many of the diamond stores give a welcome bonus where new customers are able to get something off their first purchase. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review, we didn’t find any such welcome bonus.
Many stores also incentivize subscription to their newsletter. However, while Barkev’s called on customers to subscribe; we didn’t see the “get a discount” that usually follow such calls.
That said; while Barkev’s may not be generous with the price slashing promotions. It has a great promotional offer of its own. With every purchase, the company now gives customers a gift of a Jewelry Cleaner Appliance.
The appliance uses sonic wave technology to efficiently clean all types of jewelry from earrings to necklaces, as well as engagement rings. The gift pack also includes a brush, a bottle of concentrated cleaning agent, a drying cloth, and a care guide.
With this gift of a Cleaner Appliance, customers are equipped with after-sales care solution. They can proceed to tackle the consequences of everyday wear that may dull their jewelry.
Payment Methods
When it comes to paying for your order, you’ll also want a smooth experience. Thus, the ideal online store should offer a wide range of convenient payment methods. Thankfully, Barkev’s ticks this box. You can pay for your order using PayPal and the popular credit cards. You can also pay with check.
Financing Plans
If you must buy that lovely piece but cannot cover its cost at that time. You don’t have to put off the purchase to another time. This is because Barkev’s has financing through PayPal credit. When checking out, you can select PayPal credit, and if you qualify, you can have your ring and pay later.
Shipping
Barkev’s is an online store, so you cannot simply walk into an outlet and walk out with your purchase. Your order has to be sent to your address, at a later time. Thus, shipping is an important consideration. You’ll want to know whether Barkev’s ships to your location (shipping destinations), how long it’ll take from when you place the order to when you’ll receive the package (delivery times), and how much it will cost (shipping costs).
Shipping Destinations
With a retailer that ships directly to your location, receiving delivery of your order will be hassle-free. In this regards, online retailers that ship worldwide are preferable, so that your location is more likely to be covered.
Barkev’s does well in this regards, as it ships worldwide. It ships merchandise to all US States, as well as some 240+ countries. Barkev’s do not deliver to PO boxes, and they require that someone (at least 21 years of age) be at home to sign for the package.
Delivery Times
No customer will like to wait everlastingly for an order, and especially not when it’s a high-value item like diamonds and related jewellery. Thus, the ideal online jewellery store should offer fast delivery. In this regards, Barkev’s says that it is committed to timely delivery of your orders.
For US orders, Barkev’s promises a 1 – 3 weeks lead time from the date the order is placed. Actual delivery time will vary depending on the particular item; this is because all items are made to order. Also, if you need your order delivered before a specific date, Barkev’s can arrange that.
Importantly, all items are fully insured, so you’ll not have to worry about your order getting lost in transit or in the mall.
Shipping Cost
The total cost of any online purchase is the item retail price and shipping cost. Thus, when shipping costs are too high, even items that are acceptably priced can easily become too expensive to acquire. Thus, the ideal online store will have shipping costs that are as low as possible.
Barkev’s aces it in this regards, as all US orders are shipped free of charge. Interestingly, its free shipping offer does not come with minimum purchase requirements. That is, you’ll not have to make a minimum purchase of $XYZ to qualify for free shipping. With this, there is no subtle pressure to overspend in chase of free shipping.
Returns
One of the demons that make some people still stay away from the online purchase is the “blindness” in the process. What if you do not like the item when it is delivered to you? That is why there are return policies. Customers realize that “not being 100% satisfied with the delivered item” is a real concern; so they look out for only online stores that will allow customers to return an item that is unsatisfactory and get a refund or a replacement item. Thankfully, Barkev’s accept returns.
Return Process
If you receive your order and are not 100% satisfied, you should immediately contact the Customer Support service (via telephone: at 1-800-227-7321) to report the situation, and request a Return Authorization Code (RAC). If the return is approved, you’ll get the RAC as well as a return instruction. US customers have it easier, as they’ll receive a pre-paid Return Shipping Label.
You can proceed to package the item appropriately, include all packaging and product documentation, affix the label to the box, write the RAC on the outside of the package, and then ship it to the return address.
It should be said that returned items will not be accepted if they are damaged, or show sign of wear, or have been altered in anyway, or modified, or resized, or engraved by any jeweler other than Barkev’s. Know that all personalized items are not eligible for returns. Also, all product documentation (e.g. diamond certificates) must be returned with the product. Where diamond certificates are not returned, a replacement fee of $250 per certificate will be charged.
Return Window
Also, you don’t have forever to return an unwanted item. Barkev’s only accepts the return for refund or exchange within 30 days of shipment from its facility. 30 days is the industry standard return window, but what is oft seen is 30 days from the delivery date. What Barkev’s allow is 30 days from the day the item ships from its facility.
Thus, even before you receive delivery of the item, you 30 days return window has started closing. That said if you receive delivery of your Barkev’s item and you’re not totally satisfied; you’ll have to act fast with initiating the “returns process” and shipping the return package. Else, the return window may close shut and leave you with an unwanted item; because Barkev’s will not accept late returns.
Cost of Return
Another important consideration is the cost of returning an unwanted item. You’ll not want to find prohibitive costs that’ll force you to hold on to items that you’ll rather return to the retailer.
In this regards, Barkev’s also does very well. The pre-paid return label that it provides US customers for making easy returns is also free; which means that nothing will be deducted later from your refunds as the cost of return shipping. However, only two complimentary returns are allowed per customer in one year. Thus, if you’ve had cause to return two items to Barkev’s in a calendar year, you’ll bear the cost of return shipping for subsequent returns.
Return Processing and Refunds
When Barkev’s receives the return package, you’ll get a confirmation email (or a telephone call if you prefer that). Returns are processed in approximately seven business days. This is the time for the Quality Assurance Department of Barkev’s to review the item.
After return processing if you want a refund, the original purchase amount of the item will be returned to the mode of payment used in the original purchase. Where the original purchase was by check, you’ll receive a check; allow 10 – 14 business days for this. For credit cards refunds, you should allow one month billing cycle to see the refund reflected.
Customer Support Service
When using any platform, you’ll want a platform that is responsive when you need assistance, and this is especially so considering the level of investment that diamonds and related jewellery demand. Thus, the ideal online diamond and jewelry store should have an effective customer support service for answering the questions that customers will have, and resolving any issue that customers may have with their order or product.
Online platforms usually come with a self-help knowledgebase or FAQ page which holding articles that answer many of the questions that customers may have. However, we didn’t find the standard FAQ page in the Barkev’s website. However, you’ll find a link to a blog. While the blog is very informational, it doesn’t quite have the same answers as a traditional FAQ page will. That said, if there’s one addition we think will do the Barkev’s site some favors, it will be an FAQ page.
Maybe Barkev’s do not shine on the self-help resources because they instead want customers to directly contact its Customer Support for whatever. It supports both an email service and a telephone service. You can send an email to Barkev’s using an online contact form accessible from the “contact us” link in the website. Alternatively, you may send an email directly from your email account using the email address info@barkevs.com. For the telephone service, the number to call is 1-800-277-7321.
Everyone will agree that providing contact channels is not enough. The ideal platform must have a support service marked by fast and helpful responses. The customer reviews (sourced from independent online platforms) suggest that the Customer Support Service of Barkev’s has all these markings of a great service. That is, it responds fast to customer email submissions, and their responses are usually very helpful.
Complaints
Complaints can be used to gauge the health of a company. For example, if the volume and frequency of complaints are high, then it’s safe to say that the company has a lot of cleaning to do. Thus, for this section, we went searching the online spaces to find what complaint real customers of Barkev’s have.
Before reviewing Barkev’s we always say that there is no company that satisfies all its customers all the time such that you won’t find one or two customers complaining about one thing or the other.
However, Barkev’s is one company that shattered that previously held view of ours. Search as we may, we couldn’t find any complaint against Barkev’s. Where customers spoke of Barkev’s it was only in glowing statements. Thus, a diamond and jewellery store cannot be more legit than Barkev’s.
